Joburg - Bonko Khoza, who is well known for his fan favourite character of Mqhele on the popular telenovela The Wife, was besides himself with excitement after amassing recognition at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

Khoza received an award for being the best actor in a telenovela on The Wife. The talent took to his social media platforms to thank everyone who played a huge role in his success.

“Last night one of my wildest dreams came true. To God be the Glory. Thank you everyone who believed in me and still continues to support and believe me and gift I’ve given. I pray to continue sharing it and courage, passionate and endless curiously,” said Khoza

Though Khoza had become a favourite for many viewers, it was announced that he would not return for the third season.

The production company, Stained Glass behind The Wife, has confirmed the news.

Speaking about his departure Khoza said: “Having had the privilege to play Mqhele Zulu for two seasons, I realise I’ve taken the character as far as I can.

“I’m part of finding the perfect replacement and will be watching from the sidelines to support and offer advice where needed. I know that the actor who takes over will build from where I left off, so I’m looking forward to joining the 5am club to see how the incredible love stories between the brothers and their wives play out this season. It’s not often that a show this powerful comes into the world, so we should continue to champion and encourage the talented people who will take us forward in S3.”

The telenovela is inspired by Dudu Busani-Dube’s best-selling book Naledi His Love. Season 3 of The Wife will return to South African screens in November with Gaisang K Noge in the lead role as doctor Naledi Montsho.
