Johannesburg - The mayor of Joburg is not only accused of messing up the finances of the City of Joburg, but now she is accused of stealing another woman’s fiancé and tying the knot.
Over the weekend, Mpho Phalatse got married to Brutus Malada, an official in the City of Joburg. There had long been rumours that Malada had been writing the mayor’s speeches because he was a skilled writer. Malada is also an ActionSA member who’s close to the leadership of the party.
The Star spoke to Malada’s former fiancé, Ntsako Tshifaro, who accused the mayor of ruining her relationship. According to Tshifaro, she and Malada would watch Phalatse on the evening news and sometimes comment on her as a politician.
Tshifaro is a businesswoman from Venda, and she said it came as a shock to her that two months after she was dumped, Malada was getting married to Phalatse.
It seems that although Tshifaro moved out of a house she shared with Malada in Sandton, a portion of lobola payments had been made to her family. She and Malada were even planning to have children together.
“I have never met Mpho, but there is no way that she did not know about me. I never suspected anything; I could even see that Brutus was stressed around the time of the motion of no confidence, but I thought it was work stress,” Tshifaro said.
She said she was heartbroken and wanted to forget about the whole experience because she had been played by two powerful people.
“They are both powerful, but I just don’t appreciate how they treated me and my family. All I wanted from Brutus was closure,” Tshifaro said.
Meanwhile, Phalatse’s spokesperson, Mabine Seabe, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the couple got married over the weekend in Venda. The statement said the “soul mates” were happy to be together.
Seabe did not answer questions about accusations of infidelity that had been thrown at the couple.
“It is unfortunate that pictures of this private occasion were leaked on social media given that this was and remains a private matter no further comment will be provided by the office of the executive mayor or Mr Malada,” Seabe said.
