I am passionate about making township tourism a part of everyday travel.
I don’t believe that it should be reserved just for Heritage Month, so I am so thrilled that the über-classy Soweto Wine Festival is happening next weekend.
Wine makers and lovers will be travelling from across the country to the 12th Soweto Wine Festival, which has grown to become Africa’s premium wine, food, music and lifestyle event.
Hosted from Friday, March 3 to 5 at the iconic Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, the event attracts more than 8500 patrons annually, with the numbers growing steadily.

The festival is a showcase of wines from big vineyards in the Western Cape and also offers a platform for new producers trying to penetrate the market.
The young and zealous growing wine market in Gauteng will be treated to tastings and lessons on subjects etiquette and wine pairing.
Over the years the event has become a hub for not only winemakers but artisan chefs, designers, crafters and entrepreneurs.
While there, be sure to make a turn at the famous Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, where Madiba’s house has been turned into a museum.
Archbishop Emeritus Tutu’s house is also on the famous street.
Traditional South African cuisine such as boerie rolls and steamed bread with curries will also be on sale at very classy restaurants, such as Vuyo’s and Sakhumzi.
Other exciting offerings include an oyster and champagne bar, artisan coffees and confectioneries.
There are also plenty of B&Bs for accommodation as well as the four-star luxury Soweto Hotel in Kliptown, where the Freedom Charter was signed in 1955.
Or you can just do a day visit from town.
