After nearly 20 years in operation, Montusi Mountain Lodge near Bergville in the northern Drakensberg has undergone a bit of change.
The lodge ownership has passed to the next generation of the Carte Family: Anthony and Jean Carte developed the loge out of a degraded, overgrazed cattle farm into a haven of indigenous gardens and sweeping panoramas.
After 18 successful years, the parents have retired and their three daughters have taken over the ownership of the business.
It took six years from the purchase of the property to the opening of the lodge: there was a road to build and dams to make, grass to plant and Wattle trees to eradicate, permits and plans to pass, buildings to design and construct and staff to hire, all before finding guests to stay in the beds and make the lodge real.
Montusi Mountain Lodge is in its second generation. “One of our first big changes has been to upgrade all the bathrooms in our 14 original units! Long soaks in the bath or steamy showers after a day of adventuring in the mountains are followed by sundowners on the patio to the soundtrack of birdsong or rolling thunder as the evening summer storms roll in.”
Montusi Mountain Lodge remains a place of space, comfort and peace, where adventurers are free to explore the private conservation estate on foot, mountain bike or horse, while sedentary folk can lounge poolside or stroll to the dam to watch the weavers.
