To celebrate international Pride month, singer Carla Franco has released a new single titled “Culture”.

The song was released on Friday, featuring “The Voice SA” season two finalist Armand Joubert.

“Culture” is a loud and proud anthem, an ode to the struggles and celebrations of being queer.

Franco and Joubert wanted the song to be a conversation for listeners and a celebration of the queer community and its allies.

Franco, who is from Johannesburg, said the song speaks about being queer, present and taking up space.

“‘Culture’ merely says, ‘Hey, we’re queer, we’re here, we’ve always been here, and we are not going anywhere.”

She added: “If you’re not ready to come to terms with being queer yet, no worries, you’re welcome before you are ready, and you’ll be welcome long after.

“It’s a love letter to ourselves and the community at large.”

Hendrik Joerges produced the song and worked closely alongside Franco and Joubert. Joerges composed the track to which the duo wrote the lyrics.

Franco said she wishes South African artists received more support and recognition.

“I always ask, why are we relying on international artists and international queer artists to write anthems for us?” she said.

“When I had that epiphany, it was the pinnacle moment for this song. ‘Culture’ is an anthem for the LGBTQIA+ community,” she added.

Joubert said he views “Culture” as a representation of who the queer community is, how far it has come, and how far it still needs to go.

“There’s a lot of room that still needs to be created. I’m excited for people to hear our voices together and feel inspired and uplifted to be themselves and keep fighting for equality,” he said.

He added: “We are releasing it for Pride 2022, and hopefully it can just be a reminder of what Pride is really about and remember all of those who fought for us to have the privileges we have now.”

Joubert said working with Franco on the track was incredible.

“It’s not every day that you get to work with people in this industry that know what they want and have such a clear vision such as Carla,” he said.

“She knows exactly where she’s heading, what she wants to sound like and what her future looks like. Her work ethic reminds me of mine,” he added.

On working with Joubert, Franco said she was grateful for everything he brought to the track.

“He brought his brand, sound, and exceptional vocals to the project. He also brought friendship, a support system and guidance,” she said.

“He brought a mutual understanding that local artists have a responsibility to help one another and support each other,” she added.

“Culture” is available for streaming on all music platforms.
