The iconic musical Chicago is set to make its thrilling return to South Africa, promising a sensational blend of sass, style, and song.

From 27 August to 28 September 2025, Artscape in Cape Town will host the much-anticipated all-South African cast, followed by performances at Montecasino’s Teatro in Johannesburg from 3 October to 9 November 2025. The production’s reputation as a show-stopping spectacle continues to rise, driven by a remarkable cast and an innovative creative team.

Under the capable stewardship of local producer and promoter, Showtime Management, this star-studded lineup stars Kiruna-Lind Devar as the charming yet deadly Roxie Hart, a chorus girl whose ambitions lead her down a morally dark path. Samantha Peo returns to reprise her role as Velma Kelly, the alluring vaudeville star, creating a dynamic duo with Devar. Together, these murderesses are kept in check by the authoritative yet caring Matron Mama Morton, played by Tankiso Mamabolo, who brings a strong female presence to the storyline.

Adding to the intrigue is Jonathan Roxmouth, portraying the slick lawyer Billy Flynn, a role he has excelled in during the international stages of the CHICAGO world tour. Joining him are Dean de Klerk as the well-meaning but overlooked husband Amos Hart, and M.E. Marvey as the upbeat reporter Mary Sunshine, offering a glimpse into the multifaceted characters that drive the narrative of ambition and betrayal.

The ensemble cast draws upon both returning talents from the 2018/2019 season and vibrant newcomers, ensuring an eclectic mix of performances that keep the audience engaged. Notable returning members include Lesego van Niekerk, Jenna Robinson Child, and Michael Fullard, while new faces like Angelica Hattingh and Nkosinathi Mazwai add fresh vitality to the production.

As audiences prepare for a visual and auditory feast, the over 50 member troupe is poised to impress, supported by an 11-piece band that brings life to the musical’s infectious jazz-infused score. Highlights include beloved songs such as “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” and “Razzle Dazzle”, which showcase the production’s catchy and provocative spirit.

Directed in part by international theatre heavyweights including Associate Director Tânia Nardini and choreographer Gary Chryst, this rendition of Chicago guarantees a fresh take on the classic tale of crime and fame. Kevin Kraak, an award-winning musical director, leads the live orchestra, amplifying the electrifying atmosphere of the show.

The heart of Chicago lies in its bold exploration of themes such as ambition, fame, and the lengths one will go to achieve success—elements that resonate strongly with audiences, underpinned by the show’s impressive collection of accolades, including six Tony Awards and six Academy Awards.

But while the spectacle promises entertainment, it does come with warnings of adult themes and strong language, which has earned it a PG rating of 10+. Parental guidance is advised, but that does not deter the ardent supporters of the musical genre eager to revel in its glamour and grit.

Tickets are already available for purchase at www.ticketmaster.co.za, and those looking for financial relief can take advantage of 'Terrific Tuesday' discounts. Additionally, 20% block booking discounts are available for groups of 20 or more for selected shows in specific price categories.

As South Africa welcomes the return of Chicago, theatre-goers can look forward to an unforgettable experience of music, dance, and drama. From the razzle-dazzle of a cell block full of sinful characters to the poignant realities behind the pursuit of fame, this production promises to be nothing short of enthralling.
