Cape Town pianist, Mervyn Africa and local hip hop artist Jitsvinger, will light up the stage this Heritage Day to bring to life a musical mesh-up that showcases the beauty of music.
The pair will perform together at the Star Theatre, hosted the at Homecoming Centre on Saturday evening.
This will be their second collaboration following their 2017 hit performance of Smoortjies & Smoothies at the Artscape Theatre.
This time around the show’s theme is Our Heritage, which will present a fusion of musical styles, bridging the generational gap through sound.
Our Heritage is being hosted in collaboration with the District Six Museum Foundation and sound engineering company, Eastern Acoustics.
Jitsvinger, whose real name is Quintin Goliath, said sharing the stage with Mervyn was like being in the presence of a living ancestor.
“I say this because it feels as if he is guiding the future through his experience,” he said.
“Sharing the stage with him means that the musical torch gets to be passed from one generation to the next.”
Goliath said the show’s attendees can expect to hear new music.
“There will be familiar tunes but it will be performed with new influences and twists.
“Audiences will experience the true authenticity of our musical wealth and it’s footprints across the globe,” he said.
Africa said the audience would be in for a trip that reflects on the country’s diverse history.
“It is an absolute honour to share the stage with a prolific writer and educator of our Afrikaaps rap,” he said.
“When we study the diversity of human experience, it helps us appreciate cultures, ideas and traditions that are not our own and to recognize them as meaningful products of specific times and places.
“Every song in my set has a reflection on District Six that I look forward to engaging the audience with.”
The pair will be accompanied by the Jitsvinger Ensemble and special guests.
Our Heritage tickets cost R320 and can be purchased on Quicket. The event starts at 7pm on September 24.
