Cape Town - One of the most picturesque areas in the Western Cape, the beautiful valley of Noordhoek, is set to host 19 unique gardens that will be open to the public this weekend.
Noordhoek Open Gardens will, for the eighth year allow families, garden enthusiasts and outdoor lovers the opportunity to explore the gardens while enjoying the hospitality and fresh air of Noordhoek.
“There is something for everyone; indigenous, exotic, sun-loving, shade gardens, formal, food gardens, large and small,” said organiser Kathy Fish.
Open Gardens is organized by On the Verge, in collaboration with Noordhoek Tourism.
The Proceeds of the event will go towards funding the On the Verge Community Project. The NPO employs eight local men, who are gardeners in Noordhoek, and assists in maintaining the beauty of the valley.
In collaboration with CCT Nature Conservation and the local municipality, On The Verge tackles the road verges, public open spaces, and greenbelts, for the Noordhoek Community and visitors to enjoy.
“Its such a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and most importantly one the verge which does an incredible job making the area so beautiful, it is a great pleasure opening up our gardens for the day and share the love and appreciation for gardening with similar minded people,” said home owner Kim Baxter Elliot.
Another residents Joy Nightingale said Open Gardens was a great way to inspire all who are interested in gardening.
“Our gardens are proof that you can overcome the elements and thrive in conditions that will otherwise not be great for gardening. It creates a space where gardeners can interact with other gardeners, and exchange ideas which is a great motivation. It is a wonderful opportunity to share our gardens and our knowledge.”
Tickets cost R25 for a single entry, R150 for a day pass and R250 for a weekend pass. Children under 18 visit for free, while pensioner’s get a discount.
Brochures with a description of each garden and a map can be found at most of the nurseries in the Southern Peninsula or online - visit www.noordhoektourism.co.za or simply get to any of the show gardens to buy your tickets on the day and swing by to say ‘Aloe’.
