Endler concert series launches with world class performances in Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is set to resonate with the sounds of world-class music as the Endler Concert Series kicks off its inaugural season at the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch University Conservatorium. This exciting series, which begins on 21 February 2025, promises an array of performances that cater to diverse musical tastes, featuring international virtuosos and local talent alike.

The season opens with acclaimed Dutch organist Minne Veldman, who will dazzle audiences with his exceptional skill on the magnificent Marcussen organ. The concert, scheduled for Friday, 21 February, will showcase an impressive repertoire, including compositions by Bach, Mendelssohn, Franck, and Widor, as well as Veldman's own piece based on the hymn, "Now Thank We All Our God."

On 28 February, the concert series welcomes celebrated pianist Roustem Saitkoulov for an all-Chopin recital. Saitkoulov, a prizewinner of multiple prestigious competitions, will perform the evocative 24 Preludes, Op. 28, alongside the masterful Ballades. Trained at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, he has made a name for himself on esteemed stages worldwide, from Carnegie Hall to Sydney Opera House. In addition, Saitkoulov will conduct masterclasses for students and music lovers on 27 February, providing a unique opportunity for aspiring musicians to learn from a true maestro.

March brings further excitement, starting with Seasons of Life on 7 March. This captivating concert features soprano Janel Speelman, clarinetist Annamarie Bam, and pianist Albie van Schalkwyk, who will interpret works by Schubert, Spohr, Ravel, and jazz-inspired compositions by Alec Templeton.

A few days later, on 15 March, the renowned Schola Cantorum, under the direction of Martin Berger, will present a breathtaking choral and orchestral programme that includes Fauré’s Requiem and Brahms’ Serenade No. 2. This programme promises to be a highlight for choral music lovers.

The Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra (USSO) takes centre stage on 20 March, conducted by guest conductor Chad Hendricks. The orchestra will perform an engaging programme that includes Rossini's Barber of Seville Overture and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 “Italian,” promising to enthral audiences with their dynamic presentation.

The month will conclude with a vibrant jazz showcase on 28 March featuring the Ramon Alexander Trio, composed of members of the Maties Jazz Society. The trio, fresh from their recent nomination for a Fiesta Award for Best Musical Performance, will present new compositions inspired by Alexander’s exciting projects.

Vicky Davis, Artistic Manager of Stellenbosch University’s Department of Music, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season: “This year, we are once again bringing an exciting lineup of world-class performances to Stellenbosch. The Endler Concert Series remains committed to showcasing outstanding musicians, and we look forward to an inspiring 2025 season ahead.”
